Project Description

If you are reading this, it is likely that you have successfully made it through the interview, and you have been made a job offer in Australasia or Asia. It is now all down to your references. While an employer will require professional references, you will also need personal references for the work permit application process. This is a short yet insightful post on the format of typical references.

Professional references

The barest professional reference will include the position you held at the company, the dates that you worked there, and a signature from either the manager you reported to or human resources. Really, you should hope for some positive feedback regarding your work ethic and your good character. Whenever possible, it should be printed on company letterhead. Here is an example of what a professional reference may look like:

Re: Employment reference for Mr James Williams

James joined AB&C Lawyers in January 2019 and I have had the pleasure of working with him since then. While he began in a junior position, his dedication to the role soon earned him a promotion. He has been an asset to the company, in particular with our international clients.

James has been a joy to work with. He has always shown great professionalism, and his attitude and enthusiasm have been a motivation for the company. When working in a team, James is respectful and confident to contribute his ideas. He is also able to work independently. I highly recommend James to any future employer.

Please feel free to contact me is you require any additional information.

Yours faithfully

Personal references

When seeking a personal reference, you need to make sure it comes from a non-relative. Ideally, it will be from somebody who has known you for at least several years. A personal reference points out a person’s morals and sincerity. Although not required, if it is written by a qualified doctor, lawyer, or accountant, it will be better. The following is an example of a personal reference:

Re: Personal reference for Ms Sally Holmes

Please accept this letter as a personal reference for Ms Sally Holmes. Sally and I first met at university, over 7 years ago. We have remained close since then.

Sally has always shown herself to be reliable and honest and will go out of her way to help others. She has a lively personality and has great enthusiasm for life. I wholeheartedly recommend him for any because and I am confident he will be an asset.
